The Role of Mythology in A Tale of Two Cities
ââ¬Å"A Tale of Two Citiesâ⬠by Charles Dickens is one of the most debated and criticized novels of his career. This novel was produced in Dickens' transition stage and is considered to be trivial, poorly written, and structured. Dickens would go on to write ââ¬Å"Great Expectationsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Our Mutual Friendsâ⬠. These novels were highlights in the bulk of his work and continue, today, to inspire authors and readers. A close reading of ââ¬Å"A Tale of Two Citiesâ⬠reveals a number of intricacies and themes which are overlooked during the initial reading. One of the most interesting of these motifs is the present of myth and more specifically the extremes of human nature. Dickens, in ââ¬Å"A Tale of Two Citiesâ⬠uses mythology, duplicity of the motherly matriarch, and symbolism to demonstration the universal human experience of good versus evil. Setting is of incredible importance in ââ¬Å"A Tale of Two Citiesâ⬠and takes place in the cities of Lo ndon and Paris. It is London which is represented as the hub of new thought and freedom. London contrasts strikingly with Paris which is overrun by the cruel aristocracy. It is within Dickens' articulate and vivid descriptions of both cities that the true them of this novel is revealed. This can been seen in the opening dialog of the book which shows images of ââ¬Å"Lightâ⬠/â⬠Darkness,â⬠ââ¬Å"Heavenâ⬠/Hell, ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠/â⬠evilâ⬠(1). Each city represents an extreme, good or evil, that has existed in the world since the beginning of time. This duplicity is continued in the two female characters through which much of the action within the novel is inspired. Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge are female characters that represent one of the two motherly matriarchs.Lucie Manette is benevolence personified and her double, Madame Defarge is malevolent. It is the struggle between these two women which brings about the good and bad that occur in the story. Just as this universal conflict has brought change throughout history. Dickens uses two specific mythologic imagery to support this motif ââ¬â weaving and knitting. In the title of the second book, The Golden Thread, is when Lucie becomes associated with with weaving. Lucie is said to have golden hair and is the ââ¬Å"threadâ⬠which holds her family together. She is dedicated to the greater good of her family and society. She nurtures all the people in her life and through this profound commitment she brings about one of the greatest transformation in literature. Carton begins this novel as an indolence and indifferent man with no direction and no values. However, through the love of Lucie he finds his purpose in life and dies a hero who will forever be embedded in the hearts and minds of those he died for. She nurses her father back to health both mentally and spiritually. She is ultimately responsible for creating a new country, building France into a strong nation with i s based not on oppression but the open sharing of ideas and the inclusion of all people. Weaving has always been associated with women, throughout history. It is implied that women weave the web of life. The Fates, the sisters who were said to determine fate in mythology were weavers and Dickens' does a good job of making the parallel to good mothers like Isis and Demeter, The second extreme of female matriarchs is that of Madame Defrage. She does not weave but she does knit. She wishes not to nurture but to destroy. Madame Defrage knits a list of the people she thinks should die when the new powers are established in France. She is so dedicated to the cause that she wants to win at any cost. She is associated with The Furies from mythology who were women who applied tortures to condemned souls. They were associated with vengeance and The Furies are personified in Madame Defrage. Through the characters of Lucie and Madame Defrage Dickens' links universal struggle of good and evil, an d mythological matriarchs through imagery.Lucie and her weaving is associated with light, life, and warmth. While Madame Defrage and her knitting are associated with darkness, death, and revenge. Through the integration of these images Dickens' makes ââ¬Å"A Tale of Two Citiesâ⬠not just a novel for entertainment but a real literary work which takes on one of the most universal themes known to mankind. I agree with this criticism. One of the first things I noticed was the mythological hints within the text. Madame Defrage is definitely evil and this is represented in her knitting.Knitting involves ââ¬Å"cuttingâ⬠, ââ¬Å"pointingâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"tearingâ⬠. ââ¬Å"The fingers of the knitting women were vicious, with the experience that they could tearâ⬠(220). Madame Defrage even yells at her husband because he feels kindness toward to Lucie. Lucie is again and again seen as good. ââ¬Å"Ever busily winding the golden thread that bound them together, weaving the service of her happy influence through the tissue of all their lives, and making it predominate nowhere, Lucie heard in the echoes of years none but friendly and soothing soundsâ⬠(209). During Darnay's trial Lucie is seen as a golden angel.I think that critics were extremely hard on Dickens for this novel. It was a book that was overlooked for many years as being badly written, poorly structured, and a literature for the masses. However, as you can see, after you really take the time to read and understanding the text there are several complex themes and motifs that Dickens takes on in a very subtle way. Perhaps Dickens wanted a novel that was both fun and also profound. He was comfortable enough with his writing skills to understand that for his messages to get across to the reader that he must first interest the reader.

Winter brings the cold chilly air of excitement that seeps through teenagerââ¬â¢s undying will of bringing unique trendy fashion in style. Scarves or muf flers are never out of fashion. This is specifically very important since no teenager wants to wear anything remotely out of fashion. Every year or season fashion keeps on changing but scarves have never been out of fashion. Teenagers of both the genders love to wear scarves. There are so many different patterns imprinted on them that boys as well as girls can have their favorite pick to go with any of their dress ups.The slightly thick scarves, known as mufflers, which are woolly and soft make it wrap fashionably perfectly around the neck and shoulders. When winterââ¬â¢s right round the corner, the streets or the local market or super malls will be filled with scarves and mufflers of all sorts. Itââ¬â¢s very convenient for teenagers since itââ¬â¢s never out of fashion and they never have to look far to buy a scarf. It can be purchasedà at a very reasonable price and itââ¬â¢s efficient and it keeps the body warm in winter. These scarves and mufflers can be found anywhe re and they can be bought with a good price or even cheaper. This is important since teenagers have to consider the amount of limited money or allowance they have in their pockets. Itââ¬â¢s efficient to carry around as well. They can be easily folded and put in the bag. Scarves and mufflers are very comforting too in winter. It keeps the wind off the chest and neck. Teenagers are always on the go, going here and there, so the scarves or mufflers become a protective shield from the cold harsh winter wind. Scarves or mufflers go with any outfits teenagers wear. It can be worn round the head or tied with a knot round the neck or simply wrapped around the shoulders. It can help give off an elegant look by wearing with a gown or a dress. Teenage Boys can wear it instead of a tie even with formal dresses like the suit or t-shirts. But teenagers of the masculine side usually tend to look casual and neat at the same time which makes the mufflers or scarves a very important attire. The unb uttoned t-shirt trend was out of fashion thanks to the scarves.Teenage girls can choose to wear it at a party or a family dinner, or at a restaurant. It can go with tops and jeans or with a skirt or salwar kameez or coat or even suits. Depending on how itââ¬â¢s worn, it can be twirled in a huge bundle round the neck to give off a heavy posh look or it can be casually tied with a knot to give off a light carefree look. The different types of style you can do with scarves are endless and thatââ¬â¢s why teenagers love it. Although scarves or mufflers play a very important part in teenagerââ¬â¢s fashion in winter, teenagers face competitions and usually get left out. Many teenagers try to catch up with the trend but some people are always left behind. Then there is the problem with competitions among the teens, they arenââ¬â¢t satisfied unless they look better than the rest of the crowd. So, these teenagers might tend to avoid scarves just to look more unique among their fel low peers.

Developing A Model Airbag
The reaction in Trial 2 most likely went to completion because there was an extreme increase in the amount of CA gas produced and in our observations, we did not notice any reactants that had not undergone a chemical change. The more effective design of the model played a significant role in the large production of CA gas; because Model 1 exceeded the mass limit, we used materials with smaller masses when we developed Model 2.Instead of the plastic weighing oat, we used the other plastic bags and also used less tape to attach It to the inside of our bag. In our previous trial, we noticed that acetic acid was leaking through the barrier. In order to generate a more efficient separation mechanism, we placed the sodium bicarbonate in the pocket instead of the acetic acid. The higher walls of the pocket used in Model 2 also served to prevent any of the sodium bicarbonate from falling out during transportation. However, like in Trial 1/Model 1, a possible source of error may be found in Ou r measurements: it was difficult to accurately measure the volume of the acetic acid and to measure the height of our airbag after the substances inside had reacted after the ââ¬Å"crash. â⬠In order to improve our experiment, it would be suitable if the trials were performed in a controlled environment at STOP to rule out any external atmospheric factors. If we had also employed more accurate methods of measurement, such as using a 5 ml graduated cylinder instead of a 10 ml graduated cylinder to measure the acetic acid, we may have been able to obtain a more completed reaction. The method used to measure the dimensions and volume of the bag was a little unreliable because there was too great a chance of human error. A laboratory device, possibly electric, specifically designed to measure volume could have eliminated any discrepancies in our measurements and calculations.Model 2 would be the most appropriate design for inflating airbags. As noted in Table 1, not only did it pro duce the greatest amount of CA , even more than we had initially predicted, but it also met the mass requirements. It also included the most effective system of keeping the reactants separate but allowing them to quickly deploy when it was time to perform the trial. The high walls of the pocket were suitable for preventing the Enhance from pilling during the building or transfer of the model. The design was also lighter in mass and more compact in size.
Cleopatra Assignment
Cleopatra Assignment What does it tell us about Plutarchââ¬â¢s view of the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra? Plutarch views the relationship between Antony and Cleopatra as one where Cleopatra uses manipulation, temptation and obsession to control Antony. She is viewed as a fatal influence on Antony and he seemed powerless to resist her charms. In the eyes of Rome, Antony was changing from a veteran statesman and warrior to that of an effiminate love sick juvenile on the road to destruction. At the very beginning of the passage Life of Antony, Plutarch states Cleopatra is ââ¬Ëever contributing some fresh delight and charm to Antonyââ¬â¢s hours of seriousness and mirthââ¬â¢ but there is no hint of love or romance which was viewed as showing a sign of weakness. The Romans did not value romantic love and this infatuation was another indication to Plutarch of Antonyââ¬â¢s self indulgence and complete lack of self-control.Plutarch then adds she ââ¬Ëkept him in co nstant tutelage and released him neither night or dayââ¬â¢ playing dice, drinking and hunting with him showing an obsessiveness and a leading role in this relationship and never letting Antony out of her sight. His infatuation for Cleopatra was seen as a failing and Cleopatra treated Antony with disdain and mockery, all was on her terms and Antony seemed powerless to resist her charms.Antony goes to great lengths to impress Cleopatra, for example he cheats when fishing by ordering ââ¬Å"his fishermen to dive down and secretly fasten to his hook some fish and Cleopatra goes along with this and humours him by pretending to ââ¬Å"admire her loverââ¬â¢s skillâ⬠. Cleopatra then confides in her friends about Antonyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëskillââ¬â¢ and invites them to be spectatorââ¬â¢s the following day. This attempt at impressing Cleopatra in his fishing ability backfires, as she is one step ahead. As soon as Antony has thrown in his line ââ¬Å"she ordered one of her own att endants to get the start of him by swimming onto his hook and fastening on it a salted Pontic Herringâ⬠. When Antony pulled in his catch revealing the kipper, which is not an impressive catch, this was met with great laughter by Cleopatraââ¬â¢s spectators and made Antony to look like a fool. It must be noted that this is a viewpoint from Plutarch from a series of character studies and not designed as a piece of conventional narrative history.

Bao Viet Insurance
In 2007, Bao Viet launched its Initial Public Offering and became a multi-business financial group. I.The mission, values and objectives of Bao Viet enterprise and the influences of stakeholders: To have a successful business, all companies have to have their own strategies. The first element is that the firm has to show the answer for the question ââ¬Å"why do we exist?â⬠or ââ¬Å"what do we want to become?â⬠. In other words, each company must have their missions or visions which are considered as a magnetic needle for all the people of company such as manager, workers or officers, etc to follow up. As a result, Bao Viet also has their own vision: ââ¬Å"Bao Vietââ¬â¢s vision is to be o-ne of the leading financial groups in Vietnam in life and non-life insurance, investment, securities and other financial servicesâ⬠(Anon., 2008). To achieve this mission, the company wants to set up the high standard in every services that they undertake by innovations in productions and knowledge. In addition, by these activities, Bao Viet will also build up their reputation in Vietnam and have a long-term relationship with the customers, clients and business partners. All the enterprises need to identify their values which they can believe on it to secure their businesses. There are some values of Bao Viet for their goals and aims which is ââ¬Å"innovationâ⬠, ââ¬Å"growthâ⬠and ââ¬Å"efficiencyâ⬠. Principal of innovation for this company can be set up by receiving customersââ¬â¢ comments or feedbacks. After that, the company can renew their products or provide for customers a higher standard of service. Whilst, growth and efficiency can be assessed by basing on the businessââ¬â¢s profits. For example, total revenue of the company in 1989 was VND 76 billion, after seven years, in 1996, this number increased rapidly at VND 970 billion. Bao Viet also should have some obvious objectives to follow. Bao Viet improves their standards of products and services to satisfy the demands of the clients and hope to have more customers and make more profits. For example, due to the success in the first six months of 2008, Bao Vietââ¬â¢s firm has their objective for the last six months: the business will strive to reach the total revenue of VND 3,150 billion in the whole of 2008. Next, the company should know and recognize the importance of stakeholders towards their business. There are three types of stakeholders. Firstly, we have internal stakeholders such as managers and employees who have immediate influences on the activities of the business. Managers will control all the management of the business, they decide to do or not a project so this position is very important for all the enterprises. Employees are also an major part of a business. They are the people who have the main influences on the success of a company. Employees join in the process of production directly, so if they are received high wages and bonuses to motivate them, the quality of products will improve enormously. On the other hand, if managers or employees do not do their works well, the business may get some loss of profits. The second one is connected stakeholders. Shareholders invest in the business in return of their dividends. In some cases, their investments can make them become the owners of the company if they have the largest ordinary shares of public limited company. In other words, shareholders can affect on the business by raising capital and even becoming the owners. Another part of connected stakeholders is banker who can lend the firm large amounts of cash to increase the capital. However, if the company does not make profits to repay their interest, bankers can confiscate the assets and make the enterprise go bankruptcy. Next, Suppliers who supply equipments for the company will expect to be paid and a long term relationship with suppliers can help the business to have more benefits. The last one is customers who need the products or services. For many enterprises, customers are people who decide what is produced or what price is charged. Their behaviors, feedbacks or complaints will influence on the success of the company directly. Thirdly, we have the external stakeholders. Government has a big position for the success of a business by making the laws and regulations which all the firms have to follow to do the businesses. Local authorities also can affect the business by changing local environment such as increase in road traffic. The next one is professional bodies, who want to ensure that the members of the company comply with professional ethics and standards, also affect the business. II.The extent to which Bao Viet company achieves the objectives of three stakeholders: For internal stakeholders such as managers, they are interested in the companyââ¬â¢s continuation and growth. They also have some individual interests and goals, for example, a safe and comfortable working environment and skill and career development, etc. Therefore, to achieve the objectives of internal stakeholders, the company needs to increase the revenue and improve the standards of working environment. Bao Viet was held up in 1964, they have 43 years of foundation and growth. In some first years, their revenue only raised a little, turnovers at that time was VND 800,000 with total assets of VND 900,000 because they only served for some state-owned customers. Now, Bao Viet has widened their nationwide network and developed the business to overseas market. In addition, the income also increase enormously: Its investment income in 2003 reached VND 512 billion from a total portfolio of VND 8,114 billion. These great advances make the company become one of the biggest 25 enterprises in Vietnam. Moreover, on 31st May 2007, Bao Viet was listed on the stock market to sell their shares to the public. After this, the chartered capital of Bao Viet increased at VND 6,800 billion. Bao Viet has 40,000 dedicated agents and 5,000 employees with experienced experts and young, well-trained staff so this company always has a good environment for people to work. Bao Viet also achieves in the services for customers who represent for the connected stakeholders. Customers always want to receive the best products or services for their demands. They can complain or give comments to the business about the products and their satisfaction is very important for the companyââ¬â¢s success. As a result, the firm always needs to listen to the customersââ¬â¢ opinions, this will make major influences on the new products or services in terms of quality or price. Firstly, Bao Viet strategy bases on the customer orientation which means the customers will become the centre of all activities. The company has taken over the feedback of customers and pay a large amount of money for the customers who bought their insurance. For example, Anh N of Vietnamnet (2004) said that Bao Viet had paid VND 1,000 billion for people who had got accidents or disasters in 2003. Bao Viet also issued more types of insurance such as personal insurance, river boat insurance or fishing boat insurance, etc to serve the customersââ¬â¢ demands. These types will help the customers in many careers to have more choices and make more benefits for the company. Secondly, because of a huge system of nationwide network over the country, Bao Viet has some difficulties to keep contacting with the clients in some parts of Vietnam. Therefore, the company decided to establish more offices and more officers to improve the quality of services for the customers : ââ¬Å"Bao Viet Da Nang built four regional offices in Thanh Khe, Lien Chieu, Hoa Vang, Son Tra ââ¬â Ngu Hanh Son and a line-up of 120 people who are willing to guide, provide insurance services for the clients everywhere at every time.â⬠(Ha T., 2004). Moreover, Bao Viet associated with some company to develop the quality of services for the customers such as HSBC Vietnam company. By this communication, Bao Viet might provide products for their customers through branch houses of HSBC Vietnam company. Overall, Bao Viet is improving more and more their system of products and services to serve the customers. Besides the benefits for internal and connected stakeholders, Bao Viet also satisfies the requirement of government, an external stakeholder. Government has some main roles such as passing laws to protect workers and customers, collecting taxes or subsidizing activities, etc. Mr Hoan, Chief executive officer of Bao Viet headquarter stated that in 2003, Bao Viet paid VND 189 billion for the government, increased by 8.2% in comparison with the amount in 2002 (Anh N., 2004). Therefore, Bao Viet achieved the responsibility with the government. Meanwhile, the expansion of Bao Viet will increase the chances for people to have jobs, this activity will help the government to solve the problem of unemployment. In conclusion, Bao Viet succeed to achieve the objectives of all the stakeholders which includes internal stakeholder, connected stakeholder and external stakeholder. III.The responsibilities of the company and strategies employed to meet objectives of stakeholders: The first responsibility of the company is social responsibility. Bao Viet has some responsibilities for the government. For example, Bao Viet must pay tax for their income, in other words, the company must follow all the regulations and laws which the government have issued. Besides, they also make benefits for the local communities such as reducing the ratio of unemployed people in the area. Secondly, we have the ethics and business. Obeying the law is that the company must follow the laws and regulations to do the business. Furthermore, the company has to respect the rights of competitors. The firm has not to criticize or attack the rights of competitors or do everything which can harm the competitors. Business ethics also includes that the organization should protect the employees and consumer from danger of the business. In addition, the company also must not do some illegal activities such as bribery or gifts. The next one is the management responsibilities. The company should have good relationship with all their stakeholders. Now, Bao Viet has their IPO, so they will have more shareholders. In addition, the business has the responsibility to maximize the profits for shareholders. As a result, they will continue to invest in the company and the business will make more benefits. Second one is the employees who keeps the organization in operational existence. They contribute for the company by joining in the production directly so their position is also very important and they should be received a suitable treatment in terms of wages or salary, bonuses, etc. Moreover, the firm also should give the employees a coherent career and a training structure to make them become better and work more efficiently. Meanwhile, the company needs to make a good environment for workforceââ¬â¢s lifestyle and make a good condition for them to express all their talent. Next, I will talk about the responsibility for customers. For Bao Viet, the enterprise has to listen to every feedbacks of the customers, develop the quality of services and keep contacting with them to provide enough information which the customers want to know. For the suppliers, the firm must not delay payment or use the power unscrupulously. In addition, having a long-term relationship or giving new supplier the chance to win new business also makes benefits for both sides. The business also have some responsibilities for the competitors such as the laws of competition about fair trading, monopolies or mergers, etc. The last one is responsibilities for the Community. Each area has their own social and ethical values, so that the firm has to respect these values. Moreover, when the Community needs more capital to hold up an event or charity, the business also should sponsor for them. This way will also make benefits for the company because they have a chance to spread their brand. In addition, the last one is that the enterprise has to respond to complaints for local residents. In this part, I will give some strategies which Bao Viet has followed to meet the objectives of stakeholders. The first strategy is to become oà ¬ne of the leading financial groups which has an ability of international competitiveness, providing a wide array of financial services from life and non-life insurance, securities, investment to financial services. This expansion will help the business to widen the market for more consumers. The second one is to become the corporation which is the most popular in Vietnam towards the customers. This strategy will be useful and important for a customer orientation company. Next, the company wants to ââ¬Å"become an organization that can maintain and enhance the ââ¬Å"Prestigeâ⬠ââ¬Å"Reputationâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Honesty and Integrityâ⬠, having the ââ¬Å"Loyaltyâ⬠of customers, and BAOVIET membersâ⬠(Business Environment textbook, 2008). All of the strategies are based on three gold principles of ââ¬Å"innovationâ⬠, ââ¬Å"growthâ⬠and ââ¬Å"efficiencyâ⬠. Reference http://www.vietnamnet.vn/xahoi/doisong/2004/10/340859/

Democratic Awakening (1989 - 2009) - Essay Example The fall of the Berlin Wall identified the turning point in the 20th-century history with the end of the Cold War in Europe. People were tired of the long period of misery in one of the worldââ¬â¢s greatest cities. The Berlin Wall divides Germany for 45 years, and its fall signified that German was once again one country (Sarotte, 2014). In the 20th century, Berlin went through violence and hatred that saw most of the city destroyed during the World War II (1939-1945). The city was separated amongst the nations that won the war during the period of peace. In the East Germany, the Soviet Union established a Communist government and took control of East Berlin. The West Berlin was further divided into three parts that were governed by the Americans, the British, and the French. The East Germany under communism was under a strict Soviet control while the West was made up of free democracies.à The East Berlin was poorer as compared to West Berlin. To stop the movement of people fro m East to West Berlin, the East Germans constructed a wall of iron and concrete through the city in 1961. The fall of the Berlin Wall on 10 November 1989, marked a new era in German (Williams, 2007). à à à The fall of Berlin Wall was the beginning of a key shift in Europe since the World War II. This is evident on November 9, 1989, where the East German government announced its effective opening of the Berlin Wall. A section of the paper also deals with the regulatory framework of earning management in countries like USA and UK. The concept of earning management can be defined under three board heads of white, black and Gray. White signifies the beneficial earnings which are used to enhance the transparency of the financial reports whereas black signifies the misrepresentation of the report and involves fraudulent activities. The gray denotes the manipulation of financial reports which occurs within the boundaries of the compliance, which are done to enhance the efficiency or to provide opportunistic results. Under the gray concept, earning management involves the selection of accounting principles which helps to maximize the overall utility of the management of the organization. However all earning management does not involves the misrepresentation of the facts and figures. Certain organizations do not resolve to distortion of figures of the accounting report and allows the investors to distinguish between the various components and they only undertake operations which enhance the value of the information associated with the earnings of the organization. Earning management often proves to be beneficial in determining the long term value of the organization and at the same it can be pernicious while concealing the short term value.
